Looking in the bathroom mirror, I notice that I’ve lost some weight. It’s the first time in a few years that I can see a hint of my abdominal muscles.

“Honey, come here and look at how skinny I am.”

Lacey shouts from the bedroom, “Yes, you are very skinny. Just don’t turn into Jerry on me.”

“You mean I shouldn’t start shaving my chest, arms and legs?”

“Please don’t.”

“I should probably return the skintight clothes I bought yesterday then,” I joke.

“I have a better idea: you should come back to bed and shut up.”

“I’m just excited for our day off. What do you want to do today?”

“Sleep and go look around downtown.”

“Yeah, downtown. Then everybody will be able to see how skinny I am. Do you think I should wear a mesh tank top?”

“Jesus, Wells, just bring your butt over here. It’s too early.”

Vigorously, I spring out of the bathroom, hop into bed and give her a kiss.

“You sleep. I think I’m going to go running with Jerry and grab some breakfast.”

“You do that, babe. Try to have less energy when you get back.” She smiles and rolls onto her side.

My entire team and I have the day off today. I don’t know how I’m going to handle all of this free time. Days off give us the opportunity to attempt to have a normal life. Later tonight we’ve invited Jerry, Filice, Sal and some of Lacey’s work friends to dinner with us. Before that, I’ll show her around downtown. Maybe she will be interested in the agricultural area of the compound. It’s pretty interesting how they are able to grow our produce in this frozen desert. She’d be more interested in that than I am. I can bring her to the museum; it has all sorts of things that she’d like. She never had the briefing on how everything works down here so maybe she would be interested in those exhibits. The air filtration system is pretty amazing; we can have thousands of cars expelling their pollutants into our indoor atmosphere but our air is still fresh. Plus, we don’t omit any pollutants into the air above Antarctica. It has something to do with algae, from what I remember—she’ll like that.

Despite the circumstances behind us living here, Lacey and I have tried to make the best of our time together and I can honestly say that it has gone pretty well so far. After our jog, Jerry and I sit down to some breakfast in first shifts residential area.

“So, are you and Filice looking forward to dinner tonight?” I ask.

“We are not a couple, Wells.”

“Why don’t you want anything to do with Filice? I bet you guys would be good together. Plus, as I recall you’ve already hooked up with her.”

“Hooking up is different. We are good together because we are both professionally driven, and neither of us wants anything to get in the way of that.”

“I just never understood why you always want to be single,” I say.

“Why not be single? You’ve been in and out of a serious relationship.
